Excursion to KSO

The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KSO), established in 1899, is one of the oldest solar observatories in the world. Nestled in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu, KSO has played a crucial role in advancing our understanding of the Sun and its behavior.

One of the most significant discoveries at Kodaikanal was the Evershed effect, observed by British astronomer John Evershed in 1909. This phenomenon involves the radial outflow of gases from sunspots, providing critical insights into solar dynamics and the magnetic field's influence on solar plasma. The discovery of the Evershed effect marked a pivotal moment in solar physics, solidifying Kodaikanal’s reputation as a leading center for solar research.

Over the years, the observatory has amassed a rich collection of more than a century of solar data, contributing to long-term studies of solar activity. The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory continues to be an essential asset in solar and heliospheric research, preserving over a century of scientific heritage while actively contributing to contemporary studies.

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics is celebrating the 125th anniversary of KSO. The excursion to KSO following the conference will provide an opportunity to visit this historic solar observatory.

A detailed program regarding the visit to KSO will be updated soon.
