In recent years, black holes have gained an ever increasing role in many fields of astronomical and theoretical physics research. Thanks to the 2020 Nobel Physics prize, gravitational wave detection and the EHT first-ever direct imaging of a black hole, astronomical research pertaining to  various aspects of black holes has received a significant attention. Advancements in the gravitational wave detector technology will further increase the importance of these objects in the coming years. The combination of electromagnetic and gravitational wave observations, together with advancements in theoretical and computational fronts, will shed more light about these interesting objects.

Indian Institute of Astrophysics has initiated various programmes with the aim of motivating students from colleges, universities and institutions across the country to research in Astronomy & Astrophysics. A 3-day workshop titled "Black Holes : Theory & Observations" during the second week of June with dates: 15-17 June 2023 will be conducted at the Vainu Bappu Observatory in Kavalur, Tamilnadu. The workshop aims to teach the fundamentals of black hole physics to M.Sc. students and early year Ph.D. students.  Due to accommodation constraints in Kavalur, the number of participants are restricted to 30. For each day, the morning sessions will have two 90-120 minute lectures and afternoon sessions will have hands-on tutorial sessions. In the hands-on tutorial sessions, the students will train to handle analytical and numerical problems or analyze observational data that will enhance their understanding of the topics covered in the morning lectures.

Who can apply ?

The students who:

  • are currently pursuing their M.Sc. degree or Int. Masters degree and will be completing by June 2023 or by June 2024 in the disciplines of Astronomy/Physics/Mathematics.
  • have successfully completed their M.Sc. degree or Int. Masters degree during the year 2022 in the disciplines of Astronomy/Physics/Mathematics.
  • Early year Ph.D. students, 1st or 2nd year.

Only limited applicants will be selected for participation based on their academic records and motivation to attend the school.
