Description
About books found in the Kodaikanal Observatory Library (India).
Analysis of 16 years (from 1844 to 1860) of transit solar radius observations at the Observatory
During one of the author's visits to the Kodaikanal observatory, he found rather fortuitous solar records in the library. A brief historical overview of these works is given here, together with an initial analysis of the data over 16 full years, from 1844 to 1860. The high-quality results demonstrate the skill of the observers and enable us to establish the solar declination tables used at the time. Their comparison with the values deduced by modern ephemeris calculations shows the excellence of the measurements. The illustrations provide by the author show that measuring the transit time of the Sun at the meridian was crucial and is of historical and cultural importance today.
