Established in 1919, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) stands as the world's pre-eminent professional society for astronomy. The lAU is dedicated to promoting and safeguarding the science of astronomy across all facets, including research, communication, education, and development, through international cooperation. For over a century, the lAU has played a crucial role in fostering appreciation for the Universe and advancing humanity's understanding of our cosmic place. The role of astronomy in unifying global society to address fundamental questions remains paramount, even amidst rapid and sweeping changes affecting global research, funding landscapes, the labour market, and international collaboration.
This presentation will detail the lAU's recent plans and activities, including its scientific bodies, the Offices of Astronomy for Outreach, Education, Development, Centre for the Protection of Skies, and the Minor Planet Center. It will contextualise this work within the current global environment and Indian astronomy ecosystem, and focus on the strategic potential for astronomical cooperation with India, an lAU member since 1964, outlining the lAU's evolving plans, and exploring ways the organisation can enhance its support to the Indian astronomical community.
