The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KSO) boasts a rich history of capturing the Sun's surface in white-light images since 1904. These images reveal sunspots, regions of intense magnetic activity within the solar photosphere. The features seen in these images are drawn on to the latitude and longitude grid, known as ‘suncharts’. This project delves into the development of an automated method for sunspot detection in suncharts, identification, and area quantification. Machine learning algorithms, image processing techniques, and IDL were employed to achieve this. The talk will explore the methods used for sunspot identification and discuss potential avenues for further development.
